Crime isn't just about violent offences you see on TV... Show more

White collar crime might not make headlines like violent crimes, but it's everywhere around us. Think tax fraud, credit card scams, and those dodgy emails claiming you've won money. The perpetrators are often people we'd normally trust - accountants, company directors, and other professionals who use their status to con vulnerable targets like the elderly.
What makes this particularly sneaky is how well it's hidden. Complex financial transactions and limited media coverage mean most people don't realise how common these crimes are. Victims often feel too embarrassed to report being scammed, thinking others will judge them for being "stupid enough" to fall for it.
Honour crime is completely different but equally hidden from public view. This involves violence within families to supposedly defend the family's reputation when someone has "brought shame" to the name. The victims are overwhelmingly women and girls, whilst male family members typically carry out the violence.
Key Point: Both crimes stay hidden - white collar crime through complexity, honour crime through family secrecy and cultural traditions.
These crimes often go unreported because they happen within trusted relationships (professional or family), making it harder for victims to speak out or for outsiders to recognise what's happening.

Domestic abuse is probably the most recognised crime on this list, thanks to extensive media coverage and support campaigns. You've likely seen those clever code systems in pharmacies or the awareness campaigns about spotting the signs. Yet despite all this publicity, it remains massively under-reported.
The abuse can be physical, emotional, financial, or psychological - and it's not always obvious to outsiders. Abusers are skilled at appearing loving in public whilst controlling and hurting their partners behind closed doors. Fear keeps many victims silent, worried that reporting might make things worse or put family members at risk.
Hate crime targets people for their protected characteristics - race, sexuality, religion, disability, or gender identity. Think racist attacks, homophobic harassment, or violence against transgender people. Political extremists and prejudiced individuals carry out these crimes, often targeting minorities who they see as different or threatening.
Key Point: Public awareness varies hugely - domestic abuse gets lots of attention, but hate crime awareness depends on whether you're part of the affected community.
The general public often remains indifferent to hate crime because it doesn't affect them directly. Meanwhile, victims fear that reporting might make them more visible targets for future attacks.

Technological crime is basically the wild west of modern criminal activity. From hacking your Instagram to elaborate phishing scams targeting your nan, cybercriminals exploit our digital lives. They target everyone from teenagers to major corporations, but particularly vulnerable groups like elderly people who might not spot sophisticated scams.
The tricky thing about tech crime is that it's often too complex for victims to understand exactly what happened. Plus, there's serious shame involved - nobody wants to admit they fell for that "prince who needs help transferring money" email, even though these scams are incredibly sophisticated nowadays.
State crime involves governments and official agencies breaking laws or human rights - think police brutality, illegal imprisonment, or even genocide. The victims are usually entire communities or specific groups that the state sees as problematic or threatening.
Key Point: Both crimes involve a power imbalance - tech criminals use superior knowledge, whilst state criminals use official authority.
State crimes often stay hidden through cover-ups and complex political situations that ordinary people struggle to follow. When it doesn't directly affect someone's own country, there's a tendency to look the other way rather than get involved.

Moral crimes are different from everything else because they're often called "victimless crimes" - think illegal drug use, underage drinking, prostitution, or illegal gambling. These activities break the law but don't necessarily harm other people in obvious ways.
The "criminals" here are often people in desperate situations rather than malicious offenders. Someone sleeping rough isn't choosing vagrancy as a lifestyle, and many people in prostitution are there due to financial desperation rather than free choice. This creates sympathy rather than anger from the public.
What's interesting about moral crimes is that often both the buyer and seller want to keep things secret - nobody's rushing to report their drug dealer because they'd implicate themselves too. Society tends to turn a blind eye, especially when the activities happen between consenting adults.
Key Point: These crimes challenge the idea of what should actually be illegal - many argue they're personal choices rather than criminal matters.
The lack of reporting often comes down to public indifference and the consensual nature of many of these activities. If people don't see clear victims, they're less likely to get law enforcement involved.
