Forces and Elasticity
Forces are everywhere in our daily lives, affecting how objects move and interact. A force can be either a vector (having both size and direction, like pushing a box) or a scalar (having only size, like speed).
Forces come in two main types: contact forces that require objects to touch (like friction) and non-contact forces that work at a distance (like magnetism or gravity). When multiple forces act on an object, they combine to create a resultant force that determines the overall effect.
Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object's mass, calculated using the equation W = mg where m is mass and g is gravitational field strength. This force acts through an object's centre of mass - the point where all of an object's weight appears to act.
Did you know? When you stretch a spring, it behaves elastically up to its limit of proportionality. Beyond this point, the spring becomes permanently deformed and won't return to its original length!
When looking at elasticity, springs follow Hooke's Law: the extension is proportional to the force applied . This relationship remains linear until the limit of proportionality is reached. Force-extension graphs start as straight lines but curve when a spring becomes permanently stretched.
The stopping distance of a vehicle includes both thinking distance (how far you travel during your reaction time) and braking distance (how far you travel while brakes are applied). Factors like tiredness, alcohol, and weather conditions can significantly affect both components.
Motion and Newton's Laws
Motion is all about how objects move through space and time. Displacement tells us the distance and direction an object has moved, while velocity describes how fast it's moving in a specific direction. When velocity changes, we call that acceleration.
Understanding graphs helps us visualize motion. On a distance-time graph, a straight sloping line shows constant speed, while curves indicate changing speed. On a velocity-time graph, the gradient reveals acceleration or deceleration, and the area underneath represents distance traveled.
Objects falling through air eventually reach terminal velocity when the downward force of gravity balances the upward force of air resistance. At this point, the object stops accelerating and continues at a constant speed.
Remember this! An object moving in a circle has constant speed but changing velocity because its direction is constantly changing - that's why velocity is a vector quantity!
Newton's Three Laws explain how forces affect motion. The First Law states that objects will keep doing what they're doing unless a force acts on them - this resistance to change is called inertia. The Second Law shows that acceleration depends on both force and mass. The Third Law reminds us that forces always come in equal and opposite pairs.
Typical speeds in everyday life range from walking and running to cycling and the speed of sound . These values give you a practical sense of different motion scales.
