Energy Resources
Non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil, gas, and nuclear fuels will eventually run out completely. These fossil fuels are burnt to generate the electricity that powers your home, whilst oil gets refined into petrol and diesel for cars.
Renewable energy sources never run out because they're naturally replenished - think solar, wind, and biofuels made from plants or animal waste. The UK government wants 15% of our energy to come from renewables by 2020, but we're still heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
Our energy demands keep growing due to population increases and more electrical appliances, even though modern devices are becoming more efficient. You'll notice more electric and hybrid cars on the roads as people become concerned about environmental damage from burning fossil fuels.
For heating homes, most people still use natural gas boilers, though renewable options like solar water heaters and geothermal heat pumps are available. Transport remains heavily dependent on petrol and diesel, though biofuels and electric vehicles powered by renewables are slowly gaining popularity.
Key Point: We know fossil fuels are damaging the environment and will run out, but switching to renewables faces major challenges that keep us dependent on non-renewable sources.
The biggest barriers to using more renewables include massive costs for building new power plants, reliability issues (wind doesn't always blow!), and expensive personal changes like buying solar panels or hybrid cars. These practical limitations explain why fossil fuel dependency persists despite environmental concerns.
