Conversions and SI Units
The Système Internationale (SI) gives us the universal language of measurement in science. The most essential base units include meters (m) for length, seconds (s) for time, and grams (g) for mass. From these basic measurements, we derive other useful units like liters (L) for volume and g/mL for density.
When you're converting between metric units, remember these conversions are definitions, so they don't limit the significant figures in your calculations. This means you can maintain precision throughout multi-step problems.
The mole is chemistry's special SI unit - it helps us count extremely tiny particles like atoms and molecules. One mole contains exactly 6.02214076 × 10^23 particles (known as Avogadro's number), making it possible to work with meaningful amounts of substances too small to see.
Pro Tip: When solving conversion problems using dimensional analysis, organize your work in a logical sequence: start with what you're given, add conversion factors where units cancel out, and calculate once your units match your target measurement.
