The Mole Concept and Key Calculations
Ever wondered how chemists count atoms? They use something called the mole - and no, it's not the furry animal! One mole contains exactly 6.023 ร 10ยฒยณ particles (atoms, ions, or molecules), which is called Avogadro's Number.
Here's the clever bit: one mole of any element has a mass in grams equal to its relative atomic mass. So one mole of carbon weighs exactly 12g and contains 6.023 ร 10ยฒยณ carbon atoms.
Mass, moles, and molar mass are connected by a simple triangle relationship: Mass = Moles ร Molar Mass (Mr). You can rearrange this formula to find any unknown value when you have the other two.
Top Tip: Remember the formula triangle - cover up what you want to find, and the triangle shows you how to calculate it!
Percentage composition tells you what percentage of a compound's mass comes from each element. To find it, divide the mass of your chosen element by the total molar mass, then multiply by 100. For example, in COโ, oxygen makes up 72.7% of the total mass.
When working with molecular and empirical formulas, remember that the molecular formula is always a whole number multiple of the empirical formula. Divide the molecular molar mass by the empirical molar mass to find this multiplier.
Gas volume calculations become straightforward once you know that any gas at room temperature and pressure occupies 24 dmยณ per mole. Use the formula: moles = volume รท 24.
Concentration measures how much solute is dissolved in a solution. More solute in the same volume means higher concentration, whilst more solvent (keeping solute constant) means lower concentration.
Finally, percentage yield and purity help you understand how efficient reactions are in real life. Percentage yield compares what you actually get versus what you theoretically should get, whilst purity tells you how much of your product is actually the substance you want.
