Think about this: roughly one hundred million atoms could line up across your thumbnail - that's how incredibly small these building blocks of matter really are! Every single thing you can touch, see, or even breathe is made up of these microscopic particles.
At the heart of every atom sits a tiny, super-dense centre called the nucleus. Picture it like the pit of a peach, except this pit contains nearly all the atom's weight despite being over 10,000 times smaller than the whole atom itself.
Whizzing around this nucleus are electrons - think of them like planets orbiting the sun, except they're moving in a mostly empty space. The nucleus itself is packed with two types of particles: protons and neutrons.
Mind-blowing fact: If you drew a lithium atom to scale, the electrons would be about 100 metres away from the nucleus - imagine a marble in the centre of a football pitch!
Parts of the Atom
Now let's get to know the three main characters in every atom - they're like a perfectly balanced team where each member has a specific job and properties.
Protons live inside the nucleus and carry a positive charge (+1). They're the heavyweights of the atom with a relative mass of 1 unit. Neutrons are their neutral neighbours - same mass, same location, but with zero charge. These two particles pack almost all the atom's mass into that tiny nucleus.
Electrons are the speedy lightweights zipping around the nucleus. They carry a negative charge (-1) but have almost no mass - about 1/2000th the weight of a proton or neutron. That's why scientists often say their mass is negligible.
Quick memory trick: Protons are positive, electrons are negative, and neutrons are neutral!
The beauty of atoms is that they're normally electrically neutral - the positive protons perfectly balance out the negative electrons. This balance is what keeps our world stable and predictable.
