Ever wondered why water always boils at exactly 100°C? That's because water is a pure substance - it contains only one compound throughout, with nothing else mixed in.
Pure substances have two key characteristics that make them incredibly useful for identification. They melt and boil at specific, predictable temperatures. This means you can test a substance's purity by measuring its melting point or boiling point and comparing it with known values.
Here's where it gets interesting: impurities mess with these temperatures in predictable ways. They lower the melting point and make it melt over a wider temperature range. Meanwhile, they increase the boiling point. Think of it like adding salt to ice - the salt lowers the melting point, which is why we grit roads in winter.

The mobile phase is where molecules can move freely - it's either a liquid or gas that flows through the system. The stationary phase is where molecules can't move - this could be solid chromatography paper (often filter paper) or a thick liquid. During the process, substances constantly move between these phases, creating an equilibrium.
How quickly each chemical moves depends on two factors: how soluble they are in the solvent and how attracted they are to the paper. Chemicals with higher solubility in the solvent and less attraction to the paper spend more time in the mobile phase and travel further up the paper.
