Chemical Analysis Fundamentals
Ever wondered how scientists know if something is actually pure? In chemistry, purity means a substance contains only one element or compound - nothing else mixed in. This is different from everyday language where "pure milk" just means nothing artificial has been added.
The easiest way to test purity is by measuring melting points and boiling points. Pure substances always melt and boil at specific temperatures, so if your sample melts at exactly the right temperature, it's pure. Impurities mess everything up - they lower melting points, raise boiling points, and make substances melt or boil over a range of temperatures instead of at one precise point.
Chromatography is your go-to technique for separating mixtures and identifying substances. It works because different substances move at different speeds through two phases: a mobile phase (liquid or gas that moves) and a stationary phase (solid or thick liquid that stays put). Think of it like a race where some runners keep stopping for breaks whilst others keep running.
Quick Tip: The further a substance travels up chromatography paper, the more it prefers the mobile phase. You can calculate exactly how far using the Rf formula!
In paper chromatography, the mobile phase is your solvent (like water or ethanol) and the stationary phase is the paper. A pure substance will only produce one spot, whilst mixtures create multiple spots. The Rf value tells you exactly how far each substance travelled compared to the solvent front.
Formulations and Gas Tests
Formulations are basically recipes for useful products - mixtures designed with a specific purpose in mind. Paint is a perfect example: it needs a pigment for colour, a binder to stick to surfaces, a solvent to spread easily, and additives for special properties. Even your washing-up liquid is a formulation with surfactants, water, fragrances, and rinse agents all working together.
The pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on formulations to make medicines work properly. They need to deliver drugs to the right part of your body, at the right concentration, whilst lasting long enough on the shelf. That's why medicine packets always list exact percentages of each ingredient.
Gas testing is surprisingly straightforward once you know the tricks. Hydrogen burns with a distinctive "pop" sound when you hold a lit splint near it. Oxygen will relight a glowing splint instantly. Carbon dioxide turns limewater milky when bubbled through it, and chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper white.
Remember: Each gas test is designed to be foolproof - if you see the expected result, you've definitely identified the gas correctly!
