Atoms and Ions
Think of an atom like a tiny solar system with everything perfectly balanced. Protons carry a +1 charge and hang out in the nucleus (the centre) alongside neutrons, which have no charge at all. Meanwhile, electrons with their -1 charge zip around the outside.
When an atom has the same number of protons and electrons, all those positive and negative charges cancel each other out perfectly. This creates a neutral atom - like having 3 protons (+3) and 3 electrons (-3), which gives you zero overall charge.
But here's where it gets interesting: atoms can actually lose or gain electrons! When this happens, the charges don't balance anymore, and the atom becomes an ion. If an atom loses electrons, you end up with more positive protons than negative electrons, creating a positive ion.
Quick Tip: Remember that protons stay put in the nucleus - it's always the electrons that move around and create ions!
