Alkanes & Alkenes: The Basics
Alkanes are the simplest hydrocarbons you'll study, and they're everywhere in daily life - from natural gas to petrol. They form a homologous series with the general formula CโHโโโโ, which means each molecule has saturated bonds (only single bonds between carbon atoms).
The first four alkanes are dead easy to remember: methane (CHโ), ethane (CโHโ), propane (CโHโ), and butane (CโHโโ). Notice how each one adds a CHโ unit - that's the beauty of homologous series!
Alkenes are much more exciting because they're unsaturated - they contain at least one double bond . Their general formula is CโHโโ, and this functional group makes them incredibly reactive and useful for making polymers and other chemicals.
Quick Tip: Remember that alkenes always have fewer hydrogen atoms than alkanes with the same number of carbons - the double bond "uses up" two hydrogens!
Testing and Reactions of Alkenes
You can easily identify alkenes using bromine water - it turns from orange to colourless when mixed with an alkene. This happens because the alkene breaks its double bond to react with the bromine, forming a new compound.
Combustion reactions with oxygen follow predictable patterns: alkene + oxygen โ carbon dioxide + water. For example, ethene burns as CโHโ + 3Oโ โ 2COโ + 2HโO. These balanced equations might look scary, but they follow the same pattern every time.
Addition reactions are where alkenes really shine. The double bond breaks and new atoms join on - it's like opening a zip and inserting something new! Common additions include hydrogen (making alkanes), water (making alcohols), and halogens like bromine.
Addition polymerisation is probably the most important reaction you'll learn. Thousands of alkene molecules (monomers) join together to form long chains called polymers - this is how we make plastics like polyethene from ethene.
Exam Tip: Always remember that addition reactions need specific conditions - hydrogen addition requires a nickel catalyst at 150ยฐC!
