Ever wondered why lemon juice tastes sour or why soap feels slippery? It's all about pH - a scale that measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. The scale runs from 0 to 14, where 0-6 is acidic, 7 is neutral (like pure water), and 8-14 is alkaline.
You can measure pH using indicators - special chemical dyes that change colour at different pH levels. Universal indicator is the most common one you'll use in class. For more precise measurements, scientists use a pH probe connected to a digital meter, which gives exact readings without relying on colour judgement.
Acids are substances that create solutions with a pH less than 7 by releasing hydrogen ions into water. Bases have a pH greater than 7, and when they dissolve in water, they're called alkalis - these form hydroxide ions in solution.
Quick Tip: Remember "acid = hydrogen ions" and "alkali = hydroxide ions" - this will help you understand chemical reactions later!
When you mix an acid with a base, you get a neutralisation reaction that produces salt and water. For example: HCl + NaOH โ NaCl + HโO (hydrochloric acid plus sodium hydroxide makes table salt and water).
