Think of animal cells as tiny factories with different departments, each doing a specific job to keep you alive and functioning. The nucleus acts like the boss's office - it contains your DNA and controls everything the cell does.
The cytoplasm is like the factory floor - a jelly-like substance where most of the cell's work happens, including the vital process of respiration that gives you energy. Meanwhile, the cell membrane works as security, deciding what gets in and out of the cell whilst keeping everything held together.
Two crucial components work behind the scenes ribosomes are the protein-making machines, whilst mitochondria are the powerhouses where most chemical reactions take place. Without these, your cells simply couldn't function properly.
Quick Tip Remember "MRSGREN" - mitochondria help with respiration, one of the seven life processes!
Plant cells have everything animal cells have, but they've got three extra features that make them pretty special. The cell wall made of cellulose acts like a tough outer shell, giving plants the strength to stand tall without bones.
Chloroplasts are the green machines that make photosynthesis possible - they contain chlorophyll which captures sunlight and turns it into food. This is why leaves are green and why plants don't need to eat like we do.
The permanent vacuole is like a storage tank filled with cell sap. It helps keep the plant rigid and stores important substances the plant needs to survive.
Remember Plants are basically self-sufficient - they make their own food using sunlight whilst we have to find ours!
Just like people have different careers, cells can specialise to do particular jobs really well. Nerve cells are like the body's internet, allowing your brain to send messages to every part of your body at lightning speed.
Muscle cells are built for one thing - contracting to create movement, whether that's your heart beating or you kicking a football. Sperm cells have the special job of fertilisation during reproduction.
Plants have their own specialists too. Root hair cells act like tiny straws, absorbing water and minerals from soil. Xylem cells form pipes that transport this water up through the plant, whilst phloem cells carry dissolved sugars and amino acids around like a plant's delivery service.
