The Role of Photosynthesis in Plant Growth

Photosynthesis Fact Sheet
Plants are basically solar-powered food factories! Photosynthesis happens when plants and algae convert simple ingredients into glucose using sunlight as their energy source.
The word equation for photosynthesis shows exactly what goes in and what comes out: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen (with light energy powering the whole reaction). It's like a recipe where the plant takes in CO₂ from the air and water from its roots, then creates sugar for energy and releases oxygen as a bonus.
Plants have two main transport systems that work like motorways. Xylem vessels carry water and minerals up from the roots to the leaves, whilst phloem vessels transport the newly-made sugars from leaves to wherever the plant needs them.
You can actually test if a leaf has been photosynthesising by checking for starch (stored glucose). The process involves boiling the leaf, removing chlorophyll with ethanol, then adding iodine - if it turns blue-black, photosynthesis has been happening! Stomata are tiny pores on leaf surfaces that let gases like CO₂ flow in and oxygen flow out.
Quick Tip: Remember that plants need specific minerals to stay healthy - magnesium for chlorophyll, nitrates for growth, phosphates for roots, and potassium for leaves and flowers.
