Understanding Osmosis and Water Movement
Osmosis is simply water moving from where there's loads of it to where there's less of it, but only through special membranes that act like bouncers - they let water through but block bigger molecules like sugar. Think of it like water always trying to balance itself out between different areas.
When plant cells get plenty of water, they become turgid (firm and strong) because the vacuole swells up and pushes against the cell wall. This is brilliant because it gives plants their structure and keeps them standing upright. Animal cells aren't so lucky - without a protective cell wall, they'll actually burst if they take in too much water through cell lysis.
But when plants don't get enough water, disaster strikes. Plasmolysis happens when cells lose water and shrivel up, with the cell membrane pulling away from the cell wall. This makes plants flaccid and wilted - exactly what you see when you forget to water your houseplants!
Quick Tip: Remember that plant cells have a protective wall that prevents bursting, whilst animal cells don't - this is why you can overwater plants but they won't explode like animal cells would!
Transpiration and Controlling Water Loss
Transpiration is like plants sweating - water evaporates from leaf cells and escapes through tiny pores called stomata. This process is actually essential because it helps plants absorb minerals, supports photosynthesis, and keeps them structurally sound.
Plants are pretty clever about controlling water loss though. They've got a waxy cuticle that acts like a waterproof jacket, and guard cells that can slam the stomata shut when conditions get too harsh (like at night or during scorching heat).
Several factors speed up transpiration rates. Higher temperatures make water evaporate faster, whilst increased wind speed whisks moisture away from leaves more quickly. However, humid conditions slow things down because there's already moisture in the air, reducing the diffusion gradient. Obviously, more leaves mean more stomata, so more surface area for water to escape.
Exam Hint: Remember the acronym THWL - Temperature, Humidity, Wind, and Light all affect transpiration rates, and you might need to explain how each one changes the diffusion gradient!
