Ever wondered what actually happens in a GCSE Biology exam?... Show more

GCSE Biology Higher Tier Paper 1H is your gateway to demonstrating knowledge of fundamental biological concepts. This exam lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 100 marks total.
You'll need basic equipment: a ruler and scientific calculator. Black ink is essential for writing, whilst pencils should only be used for diagrams and graphs.
Top Tip: Always show your working in calculations - you can still earn marks even if your final answer isn't perfect!
The paper tests your understanding across multiple biology topics, with marks clearly indicated in brackets after each question. Good English and clear presentation matter just as much as scientific knowledge.

Plant cells contain several key organelles that you must know inside out. Mitochondria release energy through respiration, whilst the nucleus contains genetic information (DNA). The cell membrane acts like a bouncer, controlling what enters and leaves the cell.
Chloroplasts are the green powerhouses that carry out photosynthesis, converting light energy into chemical energy. However, not all plant cells contain them - potato tuber cells, for example, don't need chloroplasts since they're underground.
Memory Hook: Think of chloroplasts as solar panels - they only exist where light can reach them!
Root cells are a perfect example of plant cells that lack chloroplasts, since they're buried in soil away from sunlight.

When investigating osmosis in potato cells, you're watching water move across cell membranes. The independent variable (what you change) is the salt concentration, whilst the dependent variable is the mass change of potato pieces.
Experimental technique matters hugely - drying potato surfaces removes excess solution that could skew your results. This prevents you from measuring water that's simply stuck to the outside rather than water that's moved through the membrane.
Exam Alert: Always identify variables correctly - independent is what YOU change, dependent is what you measure!
Calculate percentage change using: (change in mass ÷ starting mass) × 100. For a potato going from 2.5g to 2.7g, that's (0.2 ÷ 2.5) × 100 = 8% increase.

Graphing skills are crucial for presenting osmosis data clearly. Your x-axis should show salt concentration, whilst the y-axis displays percentage change in mass. Plot each point carefully and draw a smooth line of best fit.
When potato mass decreases (negative percentage change), water has moved out of the cells. This happens when the external salt solution is more concentrated than the cell contents, causing osmosis to occur.
Key Insight: The point where mass change equals zero tells you the concentration inside the potato cells!
At 0.4 mol/dm³ salt solution, potato pieces lost mass because water moved from inside the cells (lower concentration) to outside (higher concentration) through the cell membrane.

Fungal cells share many features with plant cells but have some key differences. Both contain cell walls (unlike animal cells), but fungi lack chloroplasts since they can't photosynthise.
Rose black spot is the classic fungal disease you need to remember - it affects plant leaves. Don't confuse this with bacterial diseases (gonorrhoea), viral diseases (measles), or protist diseases (malaria).
Disease Memory: Rose black spot = fungus attacks roses, creating black spots on leaves!
Cell division in fungi follows predictable patterns. If a cell divides every 90 minutes, you can calculate divisions in 24 hours: 24 hours = 1440 minutes, so 1440 ÷ 90 = 16 divisions.
