Coastal Erosion Fieldwork Investigation

Ever wondered why some beaches disappear whilst others stay put? This coastal erosion study at Walton-on-the-Naze gives you proper answers using real data collection methods.

The investigation focused on three main measurements: pebble sizes, beach gradient, and rate of erosion. Students compared managed beaches (with groynes and sea walls) against unmanaged areas to see which coastal defences actually work.

You'll work with both quantitative data (numerical measurements like angles and distances) and qualitative data (descriptive observations from field sketches). The key is understanding that winter brings more destructive wave action, making timing crucial for accurate results.

Box plots are brilliant for showing pebble size data because they display the median and spread clearly. However, they don't show specific data points, which can be limiting when you need detailed analysis.

Top Tip: Always bring multiple pieces of equipment to avoid failures ruining your data collection - reliability depends on having backup plans!

Different sampling techniques suit different purposes: systematic sampling works perfectly for measuring beach gradients at regular intervals, whilst random sampling is ideal for questionnaires to avoid bias.

Secondary data sources like Google Maps, aerial photographs, and census data provide essential context. Google Maps helps measure distances between sites, aerial photos reveal coastal defences from above, and census data gives population information - though you can't always verify how recent this data is.
