DNA Basics
DNA contains coded information that serves as the blueprint for life. Found in the nucleus of plant and animal cells, DNA exists in long structures called chromosomes that usually come in pairs. This remarkable molecule forms a double helix structure made of two strands coiled together.
A gene is a specific section of DNA located on a chromosome. Each gene provides instructions for arranging amino acids in a particular sequence to create specific proteins. Although there are only 20 different amino acids, they can be combined in countless ways to create thousands of different proteins that determine cell type and function.
Your genome is your complete set of genetic material. Scientists have mapped the entire human genome, which has opened up remarkable possibilities. This breakthrough allows researchers to identify genes linked to diseases, better understand inherited conditions for treatment, and even trace a person's ancestry.
Did you know? While your genome contains all the instructions to build and operate your body, only about 1-2% of your DNA actually codes for proteins. The rest has other functions or is still being studied!
