Microorganisms that enter the body and cause communicable (infectious) diseases

A pathogen. Very small cells which reproduce rapidly inside your body (by binary fission)

About 1/100th the size of your body cells

By producing toxins (poisons) that damage your cells and tissues

Salmonella bacteria - these cause food poisoning

A pathogen. They are not cells. They can reproduce rapidly inside your body like bacteria

They're tiny, about 1/100th the size of a bacterium

They live inside your cells and replicate themselves using the cells machinery to produce many copies of themselves. The cells will usually then burst, releasing all of the new viruses. This cell damage is what makes you feel ill

A pathogen. There are a lot of different types of protists but they are all eukaryotes and most of them are single celled. Some protist are parasites

Parasites live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage. They are often transferred to the organism by a vector which doesn't get the disease itself (for example an insect that carries the protist. An example of this is malaria is caused by a protist that lives inside of a mosquito)

A pathogen. Some fungi are single celled, other have a body made up of hyphae (thread-like structures)

They can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing diseases. The hyphae can produce spores which can be spread to other animals or plants (for example the black spot fungus infects rose plants)

They produce toxins that damage your cells and tissues

Clostridium tetani is the bacterium that causes tetanus. It usually enters the body through deep cuts. Suggest how Clostridium tetani may make you feel ill

The infected student might cough or sneeze, releasing droplets containing the virus into the air. Someone else in the classroom could breathe these in and become infected

The chickenpox virus can be carried in droplets in the air. Suggest how an infected student could infect someone else who is sitting in another part of the same classroom
