The circulatory system plays an essential role in the human body and has two main functions: transport and protection against disease. Transport involves the movement of blood cells, food, glucose (amino acid), carbon dioxide, and urea. The protection against disease is facilitated by white blood cells, with lymphocytes producing antibodies and phagocytes engulfing and digesting microorganisms through a process called phagocytosis.

Blood Components

The liquid part of the blood is called plasma. Its main function is the transport of blood cells, food molecules, carbon dioxide, hormones, and urea. The plasma also contains salts and other chemicals that keep its concentration stable and at a concentration similar to that of the blood cells. In addition, the plasma aids in the prevention of the bursting of red blood cells through a process called cell lysis.

Another essential component of the circulatory system is the kidney, which helps keep the blood at the correct concentration by controlling the reabsorption of water into the body.

The Circulatory Process

The circulatory system involves various vessels, such as arteries, veins, and capillaries, all contributing to the flow of blood in different directions and towards the heart. The valves within the system prevent backflow and make sure that the heart acts as a unidirectional (one-way) pump. Additionally, the system is distinguished by a double circulation, where the blood travels through the heart twice for each complete circuit of the body.
