Your heart works non-stop to pump blood around your body,... Show more

Ever wondered why heart disease is such a big killer? Coronary heart disease (CHD) happens when fatty material builds up inside the coronary arteries - the vital blood vessels that supply your heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.
Think of it like a water pipe getting clogged with limescale. As these fatty deposits accumulate, they narrow the arteries and reduce blood flow. Your heart muscle then struggles to get enough oxygen and glucose to function properly.
Risk factors are basically anything that increases your chances of developing cardiovascular disease. Some you can't control (like your age, sex, or genes), whilst others are totally within your power to change (like your diet, exercise habits, and whether you smoke).
Quick Fact: Men are much more likely to develop CHD than women, and your risk increases significantly as you get older.

Understanding what puts you at risk is absolutely crucial for preventing cardiovascular disease. Genetic factors mean some people are simply born with a higher chance of developing CHD - it runs in families.
High blood pressure is particularly nasty because it forces your arteries to develop thicker walls and narrower passages. Meanwhile, smoking damages both your heart and lungs whilst messing with your blood pressure levels.
Here's where it gets interesting: low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are the "bad" cholesterol that cause dangerous build-ups in your arteries. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are the "good guys" that actually help remove excess cholesterol from your bloodstream.
Other major risks include high salt intake, lack of exercise, obesity, stress, and excessive alcohol consumption. The good news? Most of these are completely controllable through lifestyle changes.
Remember: A diet high in LDLs will narrow your blood vessels and increase your chances of developing dangerous blockages in your coronary arteries.

Atherosclerosis is basically your arteries getting clogged up, and it follows a terrifyingly predictable pattern. It starts when high blood pressure damages the smooth inner lining (endothelium) of your artery.
Cholesterol from your blood then sneaks under this damaged lining, triggering your body's immune response. Macrophages (a type of white blood cell) try to engulf the cholesterol but get stuck, forming a fatty lump called an atheroma.
Calcium and other minerals in your blood then harden this atheroma into a plaque. This restricts blood flow and pushes your blood pressure even higher, creating a vicious cycle.
The real danger comes if the atheroma ruptures. This can cause a blood clot (thrombosis) that completely blocks the artery, potentially causing a heart attack or stroke.
Key Point: Saturated fats increase LDLs (bad cholesterol), whilst unsaturated fats boost HDLs (good cholesterol) that transport cholesterol safely to your liver.

You've probably heard about "good" and "bad" cholesterol, but what do they actually do? LDL is the villain here - it carries cholesterol from your liver to your cells, but too much LDL leads to dangerous build-ups on artery walls.
HDL is your cardiovascular superhero. It swoops through your bloodstream, collecting excess cholesterol and transporting it back to your liver where it's broken down or eliminated from your body.
The balance between these two is absolutely critical. High LDL levels combined with low HDL levels create the perfect storm for cardiovascular disease development.
Your body needs some cholesterol to function properly, but it's all about maintaining the right balance. High LDL and low HDL significantly increase your risk of coronary artery disease and stroke.
Pro Tip: Blood tests can measure your LDL to HDL ratio, giving doctors a clear picture of your cardiovascular risk.

Picture your artery as a multi-layered tube with a smooth inner lining called the endothelium. When this lining gets damaged (usually by high blood pressure), it's like creating a crack in a dam wall.
White blood cells and lipids (fats) from your blood start clumping together under this damaged lining, forming fatty streaks. Over time, more white blood cells, lipids, and connective tissue pile up and harden.
This creates a fibrous plaque called an atheroma that partially blocks the artery's opening (lumen). As blood flow becomes restricted, your blood pressure increases to compensate, potentially causing more damage elsewhere.
The atheroma essentially turns your smooth artery into a bumpy, narrowed tube that struggles to deliver adequate blood flow to vital organs like your heart and brain.
Visual Aid: Think of an atheroma like a speed bump in your bloodstream - it forces blood to squeeze through a much smaller space.

When atheromas weaken artery walls and high blood pressure pounds against them, you can develop an aneurysm - basically a dangerous balloon-like bulge. If this bursts, it causes internal bleeding (haemorrhage) that can be fatal.
Thrombosis occurs when an atheroma ruptures through the artery's inner lining, creating a rough surface. Platelets and fibrin proteins rush to the damage site and form a blood clot (thrombus) that can completely block the artery.
A myocardial infarction (heart attack) happens when a coronary artery gets completely blocked, cutting off oxygen supply to part of your heart muscle. Without oxygen, heart muscle cells can't perform respiration and begin to die.
Heart attack symptoms include chest pain, arm pain, shortness of breath, and sweating. If large areas of heart muscle are affected, complete heart failure can occur, which is often fatal.
Emergency Knowledge: Recognising heart attack symptoms quickly can be the difference between life and death - every minute counts when calling for medical help.

A stroke happens when blood supply to part of your brain gets cut off, whilst a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or "mini stroke" involves temporary disruption. Both can result from blood clots, but strokes might also involve brain bleeding.
Modern medicine offers several weapons against cardiovascular disease. Beta-blockers lower blood pressure, whilst statins reduce LDL levels and overall blood cholesterol.
Anticoagulants like heparin reduce blood clotting ability, and platelet inhibitors stop platelets from clumping together to form dangerous clots.
The key is prevention rather than treatment. Understanding these medications helps you appreciate why doctors take cardiovascular risk factors so seriously.
Medical Insight: These medications work best when combined with lifestyle changes like improved diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation.

Myocardial infarction is the medical term for a heart attack, and it's the result of your heart muscle being starved of blood and oxygen. The symptoms are unmistakable once you know what to look for.
Common heart attack symptoms include chest pain, arm pain, anxiety, nausea, sweating, and coughing. These occur because your heart muscle is literally dying from lack of oxygen.
Angina is like a warning shot - it happens when a coronary artery is partially blocked, causing chest pain during physical activity. A heart attack, however, results from total blockage of a coronary artery.
Understanding this difference is crucial because angina gives you a chance to seek treatment before suffering a potentially fatal heart attack.
Life-Saver: If you experience persistent chest pain, especially with other symptoms like sweating and nausea, call emergency services immediately - don't wait to see if it gets better.
