Plant and Animal Cell Structures
Every living thing is made up of cells, but not all cells are identical. Animal and plant cells share some basic parts, but plants have a few extra features that make them special.
Both types of cells contain a nucleus (the control centre with genes), ribosomes (protein factories), mitochondria (powerhouses that release energy through respiration), a cell membrane (security guard controlling what enters and leaves), and cytoplasm .
Plant cells have three unique structures that animal cells lack. Chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis to make food for the plant. The cell wall made of cellulose provides support and helps maintain the cell's shape. The large vacuole contains cell sap and keeps the plant cell rigid and upright.
Quick Test Tip: Remember the three plant-only structures: chloroplasts (food factory), cell wall (structural support), and vacuole (keeps it rigid)!
Specialised Cells and Microscopy
Some cells have evolved for very specific jobs, becoming specialised cells with unique features. Sperm cells have a tail for swimming and an acrosome to penetrate egg cells. Egg cells are large and packed with nutrients. Ciliated epithelial cells have tiny hairs called cilia that sweep particles away from your lungs.
Bacterial cells are quite different - they have a flagellum for movement, plasmid DNA containing extra genes, but no proper nucleus. They're much simpler than plant and animal cells.
To see these tiny structures, we use microscopes. Light microscopes can magnify up to 2,000 times, whilst electron microscopes reach an incredible 10 million times magnification! The key formula is: magnification = image size ÷ real size.
When using a light microscope, always start with low power, clip your slide onto the stage, adjust the light source, use coarse focusing first, then switch to high power and fine-tune with the fine focusing wheel.
