Homeostasis Basics

Your body is like a well-oiled machine that constantly monitors and adjusts itself. Homeostasis keeps your internal environment stable despite whatever chaos is happening around you - whether you're sweating in PE or shivering outside in winter.

The body uses control systems with three key parts: receptors (which detect changes), coordination centres (like your brain processing the information), and effectors (muscles or glands that actually do something about it). Think of it as your body's personal security system that never takes a break.

These systems control crucial things like blood glucose, body temperature, and water levels. Without homeostasis, your enzymes wouldn't work properly and your cells would basically throw a tantrum.

Remember: All homeostasis works through negative feedback - when something goes up, your body brings it down, and vice versa!

The Nervous System & Reflexes

Your nervous system is basically your body's electrical wiring, allowing you to react to everything around you. When you touch something hot, receptor cells convert that stimulus into an electrical impulse that races along sensory neurons to your central nervous system.

Reflexes are your body's emergency responses that happen before you even realise it. The impulse takes a shortcut called a reflex arc, bypassing your conscious brain entirely. That's why you pull your hand away from something hot before you've even processed what's happening.

Synapses are the tiny gaps between neurons where chemicals carry the message across. It's like passing notes in class - the first neuron releases a chemical messenger that diffuses across the gap and triggers the next neuron to fire.

Your reaction time - how quickly you respond to something - can be measured with simple tests like the ruler drop experiment. Pretty handy for improving your gaming skills!

Quick Tip: Reflexes exist to keep you safe - they're faster than conscious thought because survival doesn't have time for hesitation.

The Brain & Eye

Your brain controls complex behaviour through billions of connected neurons. The cerebral cortex handles consciousness and memory, the cerebellum controls precise movements, and the medulla keeps you breathing without thinking about it.

Studying the brain is incredibly challenging because it's delicate, not fully understood, and drugs often can't reach it properly. Scientists use methods like studying brain damage patients, electrical stimulation, and MRI scanning to map brain regions.

The eye is your window to the world, containing light-sensitive receptors that create the images you see. Key structures include the retina (detects light), cornea (focuses light), and iris (controls pupil size depending on light levels).

Accommodation lets you focus on near and distant objects by changing lens shape. The ciliary muscles contract for near objects (making the lens thicker) and relax for distant objects (making the lens thinner). Eye defects like myopia shortsightednessshort-sightedness and hyperopia longsightednesslong-sightedness can be corrected with glasses, contacts, or laser surgery.

Fun Fact: Your pupil automatically adjusts to light levels - circular muscles contract in bright light to protect your retina, while radial muscles contract in dim light to let more light in.

Temperature Control & Hormones

Your thermoregulatory centre in the brain maintains your body temperature at exactly 37.5°C. When you're too hot, you sweat (cooling through evaporation) and blood vessels near your skin dilate (vasodilation) to release heat.

When you're cold, sweating stops, you shiver to generate heat, hairs stand up to trap warm air, and vasoconstriction reduces blood flow near the skin to conserve heat. It's like having a built-in thermostat that never needs batteries.

The endocrine system uses chemical messengers called hormones that travel through your bloodstream. Unlike the nervous system's instant responses, hormones work slower but last longer - perfect for controlling things like growth and metabolism.

Key glands include the pituitary gland (the master controller), pancreas (blood sugar control), thyroid (metabolism), and adrenal glands fightorflightresponsesfight-or-flight responses. Each hormone targets specific tissues to produce precise responses.

Remember: The endocrine system is like sending letters (slow but lasting) while the nervous system is like phone calls (fast but brief).

Blood Glucose Control

Your blood needs just the right amount of glucose - too little and your cells can't function, too much and it becomes toxic. The pancreas is the star player here, constantly monitoring and adjusting glucose levels.

After eating carbs, blood glucose rises, so the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin tells muscle cells to absorb glucose for energy and tells the liver to convert excess glucose into glycogen for storage. It's like having a glucose storage manager.

During exercise or between meals, blood glucose drops, triggering glucagon release. Glucagon tells the liver to break down stored glycogen back into glucose, restoring blood levels. These two hormones work in perfect opposition through negative feedback.

Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas can't make enough insulin, requiring insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes means your cells ignore insulin signals, often linked to obesity and treated through diet, exercise, and medication.

Key Point: Insulin lowers blood glucose, glucagon raises it - they're like biological opposites keeping you in perfect balance.

Water Balance & Kidneys

Your cells are picky about water levels - too much and they burst, too little and they shrivel up. Osmosis drives water movement, so maintaining the right water concentration in your blood is absolutely crucial.

Your kidneys are amazing filters that clean your blood 24/7. They remove waste like urea (from protein breakdown), excess water, and ions while keeping the good stuff like glucose. Think of them as your body's water treatment plant.

Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) fine-tunes water loss through another negative feedback loop. When your blood gets too concentrated, your brain releases ADH, making kidney tubes more permeable to water, producing less but more concentrated urine.

Kidney failure is serious business. Dialysis uses an artificial membrane to clean blood but requires hospital visits three times weekly. Kidney transplants offer a cure but risk rejection by the immune system, requiring immunosuppressant drugs that leave you vulnerable to infections.

Health Tip: Your kidneys filter about 180 litres of blood daily but only produce 1-2 litres of urine - that's some serious recycling!

Reproductive Hormones

Puberty kicks off when reproductive hormones start flowing, causing all those awkward physical changes. Testosterone in males stimulates sperm production, while oestrogen in females triggers physical development and controls the menstrual cycle.

The menstrual cycle is a monthly preparation for potential pregnancy. It starts with the uterine lining breaking down (your period), then rebuilds until ovulation on day 14 when an egg is released.

Four hormones orchestrate this complex dance: FSH causes egg maturation, oestrogen rebuilds the uterine lining, LH triggers ovulation, and progesterone maintains the lining. They work together through intricate feedback loops.

Understanding these cycles helps explain everything from mood swings to fertility timing. The hormones don't just affect reproduction - they influence bone density, mood, and overall health throughout life.

Did You Know: The menstrual cycle averages 28 days, but anywhere from 21-35 days is completely normal - every person's body has its own rhythm.

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.

This apps acc the goat. I find revision so boring but this app makes it so easy to organize it all and then you can ask the freeeee ai to test yourself so good and you can easily upload your own stuff. highly recommend as someone taking mocks now
