Biology practicals are essential skills you'll need for your GCSEs... Show more

Ever wondered how to get that perfect view under a microscope? Start with the lowest power objective lens (4x) and work your way up. The mirror reflects light through the stage, whilst the eyepiece lens (usually 10x magnification) combines with the objective lens to give you the total magnification.
Your technique matters loads here. Always lower the objective lens until it nearly touches the slide using the coarse focusing dial, then look through the eyepiece and slowly move away from the slide until the image comes into focus. Use the fine focusing dial for that crystal-clear view.
Culturing microorganisms requires proper sterile technique to avoid contamination. Heat your inoculating loop in a Bunsen burner flame, open agar plates near the flame to kill airborne bacteria, and always work with sterilised equipment. When testing antibiotic effectiveness, you'll measure the zone of inhibition (the clear area where bacteria can't grow) using πr².
Top Tip: Always place agar plates upside down in the incubator at 25°C to prevent moisture from dripping onto your bacterial colonies!

Osmosis experiments with potato cylinders show you exactly how water moves across cell membranes. Cut identical cylinders using a cork borer, measure their length and mass precisely, then place them in different concentrations of sugar solution overnight. The percentage change in length or mass tells you whether water moved in or out of the cells.
Food tests are brilliant for identifying what's actually in your grub. Each test has a specific colour change that confirms the presence of different nutrients. The starch test uses iodine solution, turning orange/brown to blue-black when starch is present.
For protein detection, add biuret solution to your food sample - it'll turn purple if proteins are there. Benedict's test for sugars needs heating in a water bath and changes from blue to brick red with reducing sugars. The lipids test involves shaking your sample with ethanol, then adding water - a white cloudy emulsion confirms fats are present.
Remember: Always filter your food solution first, except for the lipids test where you need those fat particles to create the emulsion!

Amylase enzyme experiments show you how pH affects enzyme activity brilliantly. You'll track how quickly amylase breaks down starch by testing samples with iodine solution every 30 seconds. When the iodine stops turning blue-black, you know all the starch has been digested.
Set up multiple test tubes with different pH buffers and time how long it takes for the starch to completely disappear. This gives you proper data about optimal enzyme conditions. Taking samples every 10 seconds rather than 30 gives you more accurate results.
Photosynthesis investigations measure oxygen production at different light intensities. Position pondweed at various distances from an LED light source (LEDs don't produce much heat, so they won't mess up your results). Count the oxygen bubbles produced per minute, or better yet, collect the gas in an upturned measuring cylinder for more accurate volume measurements.
The inverse square law explains why light intensity decreases rapidly with distance - when you double the distance, light intensity becomes four times weaker. This relationship is crucial for understanding your photosynthesis results.
Pro Tip: Always let your pondweed acclimatise for 5 minutes before starting measurements, and take repeat readings to calculate a reliable mean!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
