Understanding Longitudinal, Transverse, and Sound Waves

Types of Waves
There are two main types of waves that behave very differently. Longitudinal waves have oscillations that move parallel to the direction the energy travels - imagine pushing a slinky back and forth. Transverse waves work differently, with oscillations moving perpendicular (at right angles) to the energy's direction.
You encounter longitudinal waves every day through sound waves, ultrasound (used in medical scans), and seismic P-waves that travel through the Earth during earthquakes. These waves compress and stretch the material they're travelling through.
Transverse waves include radio waves that carry your favourite stations, light waves that let you see everything around you, microwaves that heat your food, and X-rays used in hospitals. These waves move up and down whilst travelling forwards.
Quick Tip: Remember transverse waves like ocean waves - they go up and down whilst moving forwards!
Sound Waves and Key Terms
Sound waves are longitudinal waves created when vibrations pass through particles. You need two things for sound: something vibrating and particles for the waves to travel through. This is why there's no sound in space - it's a vacuum with no particles for vibrations to travel through!
When something vibrates, it creates a series of compressions (where particles are squeezed together) and rarefactions (where particles spread out) moving through the air. The loudness of any sound is measured in decibels (dB).
Understanding wave terminology is crucial for your exams. Frequency tells you how many waves pass per second. Amplitude measures the distance from the middle of a wave to its highest or lowest point - bigger amplitude means louder sounds or brighter lights. Wavelength is the distance between the same point on two consecutive waves.
