Measuring Reaction Rates
The average rate of reaction tells you how quickly reactants turn into products. It's simply the change in what you're measuring divided by the change in time - think of it like calculating speed in physics.
You've got three main ways to measure this in the lab. A gas syringe captures gas produced and measures its volume directly. Alternatively, you can collect gas over water in a measuring cylinder - the gas pushes water out, showing you the volume. The third method uses a balance with cotton wool that lets gas escape whilst measuring the loss in mass.
Top Tip: These apparatus setups are exam favourites - make sure you can sketch and explain each one!
Each method gives you data to plot graphs and calculate rates. The steeper the slope on your graph, the faster your reaction is going.
What Makes Reactions Speed Up
Four key factors control how fast your reactions go, and they all boil down to one thing: successful collisions between particles.
Concentration matters because more particles in the same space means more chances for collisions. Higher temperature gives particles more energy, so more of them can overcome the activation energy barrier. Particle size is crucial too - smaller particles have larger surface areas, creating more collision opportunities.
Catalysts are the real game-changers - they lower the activation energy without getting used up. Homogeneous catalysts are in the same state as reactants, whilst heterogeneous catalysts are different (like a solid catalyst with liquid reactants). Enzymes are nature's catalysts, working in living cells with specific optimum conditions.
Potential energy diagrams show the energy journey during reactions. Exothermic reactions release energy , whilst endothermic reactions absorb it . The peak represents the unstable activated complex that exists for just a split second.
Remember: All these factors link back to collision theory - more collisions or more energetic collisions mean faster reactions!
