Understanding Enthalpy Changes

Think of enthalpy as the energy stored in a chemical system - you can't measure it directly, but you can definitely feel its effects when reactions heat up or cool down. When chemists talk about enthalpy change (ΔH), they're measuring how much energy gets transferred between a reaction and its surroundings at constant pressure.

The formula ΔH = H(products) - H(reactants) shows you're basically calculating the energy difference between what you start with and what you end up with. Remember, energy can't be created or destroyed (conservation of energy) - it just moves around.

You'll need to understand three types of systems: isolated (no matter or energy exchange), closed (energy exchange only), and open (both matter and energy can move freely). Most lab reactions happen in open systems.

Key Point: Standard conditions are pressure = 100 kPa and temperature = 298K (25°C) - you'll see these everywhere in exam questions.

Exothermic vs Endothermic Reactions

Here's where chemistry gets proper interesting - reactions either give out energy (exothermic, negative ΔH) or take in energy (endothermic, positive ΔH). If your test tube gets warm, you're dealing with an exothermic reaction transferring energy to the surroundings.

Reaction profiles are your best friend for visualising this. In exothermic reactions, products sit lower than reactants on the energy diagram, whilst endothermic reactions show products higher up than where they started.

Activation energy is like the energy hill that reactants must climb before they can become products - think of it as the minimum energy investment needed to get any reaction going.

Exam Tip: Remember that even exothermic reactions need activation energy to get started - that's why you need a spark to light a Bunsen burner even though burning gas releases loads of energy.

Standard Enthalpy Changes

You'll encounter three main types of standard enthalpy changes that pop up constantly in exams. Enthalpy of formation measures the energy change when 1 mole of a substance forms from its constituent elements - like making water from hydrogen and oxygen gases.

Enthalpy of combustion tracks the energy released when 1 mole of substance burns completely in oxygen. This is massively important for understanding fuels and why petrol makes cars go.

Enthalpy of neutralisation measures energy changes when acids and bases react to form 1 mole of water. These values are surprisingly consistent because you're essentially making the same product (water) regardless of which acid and base you use.

Study Smart: All these definitions include "1 mole" and "standard conditions" - missing either detail in exam answers will cost you marks, so drill these definitions until they're automatic.

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
