Bakterije - mikroskopski prebivalci
Predstavljaj si organizem, ki je tako majhen, da ga lahko vidiš samo z mikroskopom, vendar je tako močan, da lahko živi skoraj povsod. To so bakterije - majhni enocelični organizmi, ki jih najdemo dobesedno povsod okoli nas.
Bakterija je prokariontski organizem, kar pomeni, da nima oblikovanega jedra. Njen dedni material (DNK) prosto plava v citoplazmi - to je glavna razlika od naših celic, ki imajo jedro.
Bakterijska celica je preprosto zgrajena: celična stena ji daje obliko in zaščito, celična membrana nadzoruje, kaj gre v celico in ven, citoplazma je tekočina, kjer potekajo življenjski procesi. Biček jim pomaga pri premikanju, ribosomi pa izdelujejo beljakovine.
Zanimivost: Bakterije so tako prilagodljive, da lahko živijo celo v vročih vrelcih ali globoko v ledu!
Oblike in razmnoževanje bakterij
Bakterije imajo različne oblike, ki ti pomagajo pri prepoznavanju. Koki so okrogli, bacili paličasti, spirili zaviti kot spirala, vibrioni pa ukrivljeni kot vejica.
Razmnoževanje poteka preko cepitve - nespolnega načina, kjer se ena bakterija preprosto razdeli na dve enaki. Najprej zraste, potem se njen dedni material podvoji in na koncu se celica preščipne na sredini.
Ta proces je neverjetno hiter! V ugodnih pogojih se lahko bakterija deli vsakih 20 minut. To pomeni, da lahko iz ene same bakterije v nekaj urah nastane na milijone novih - zato se okužbe lahko hitro razširijo.
Pametno vedeti: Iz ene bakterije lahko v 8 urah nastane preko 16 milijonov potomcev!
Prehranjevanje in življenjski pogoji
Bakterije so mojstri preživetja z različnimi načini prehranjevanja. Heterotrofne bakterije dobijo hrano iz okolja - gniloživke se hranijo z odmrlimi stvarmi in so pomembni razkrojevalci, zajedavke živijo na račun drugih organizmov in povzročajo bolezni, simbionti pa živijo v korist obeh.
Avtotrofne bakterije si sami proizvajajo hrano s fotosintezo, podobno kot rastline. Primer so cianobakterije.
Za življenje potrebujejo hrano, vodo in primerno temperaturo. Večina jih ima rada toploto, vendar so nekatere ekstremno prilagodljive.
V našem življenju imajo bakterije različne vloge - od koristnih do škodljivih. Prav zato je pomembno razumeti, kdaj so naše zaveznice in kdaj naše nasprotnice.
Pomembno: Večina bakterij je za nas neškodljivih ali celo koristnih - le manjšina povzroča bolezni!
Koristne in škodljive bakterije
Koristne bakterije so naši nevidni pomočniki. V črevesju nam pomagajo pri prebavi in proizvajajo vitamin K. V prehrani jih uporabljamo za izdelavo jogurta, sira in kislega zelja. V naravi so razkrojevalci - brez njih bi bil svet poln odmrlih organizmov.
Škodljive (patogene) bakterije pa povzročajo bolezni. Streptokoki povzročajo angino, salmonela zastrupitev s hrano, bakterije v ustih pa karies. Škodujejo tako, da se hitro razmnožujejo in proizvajajo toksine - strupene snovi, ki poškodujejo naše celice.
Antibiotiki so zdravila, ki uničujejo SAMO bakterije - na viruse sploh ne delujejo! Zato jih jemlji samo, ko ti jih predpiše zdravnik za bakterijsko okužbo.
Zaščitiš se z higieno (umivanje rok), pravilno pripravo hrane (kuhanje uniči bakterije), pasterizacijo mleka in cepljenjem proti nevarnim boleznim.
Ključno za teste: Antibiotiki delujejo samo na bakterije, ne na viruse kot so prehlad ali gripa!
